Butterflies

Songs:

I wish I were a Butterfly

(Sung to: Oh I wish I were a little bar of soap)

Oh, I wish I were a little butterfly.

Butterfly.

Oh, I wish I were a little butterfly.

Butterfly.

I would go zoom, zoom, zoom.

All around the room.

Oh, I wish I were a little butterfly.

Caterpillar to Butterfly

There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle,
There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle,
There's a tiny caterpillar, a tiny caterpillar, a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle. (children do wiggling action for this verse)
There's a big fat caterpillar on a leaf, munch, munch, etc (munching action)
There's a pretty butterfly on a leaf, flutter, flutter, etc (fluttering action)

The Fuzzy Caterpillar
(Sung to:  Itsy Bitsy Spider)

The fuzzy caterpillar
Curled up on a leaf,
Spun her little chrysalis
And then fell fast asleep.
While she was sleeping
She dreamed that she could fly,
And later when she woke up
She was a butterfly!

Butterfly Mobile

Materials Needed:

    5 butterfly templates (1 2 3 4 5)
    2 Dowel Stick
    Yarn (or string or ribbon)
    Scissors
    Tape
    Glue
Crayons (or markers or colored pencils)

Print out a total of 5 butterfly prints... 2 of each for a total of 10 printed butterflies. Color each of the butterflies. You can pick all the same butterflies... or all different butterflies... you can color them any color you would like them to be. Once you have them colored, then carefully cut each one of them out.

Cut the string the length you would like your butterflies to hang down... remember to allow for the length you need to tie the butterfly to the hanger. Lay one of the butterflies - good side down - so that you see the back of the butterfly. Tape the string in place.

Put some glue onto the wings of the butterfly that is laying down. Then add the second matching butterfly ... glue the two back sides of the butterfly together.

Once the glue on the butterflies has set up then tie the butterflies in place on the dowel stick hanger. The blue dots show the areas where the butterflies should be placed. If your dowel sticks are short... 5 butterflies should fit... if your dowel sticks are longer, then you can fit more butterflies on your mobile.

Ants

Songs:

Oh the Ants are Busy!
(Sung to: Shell be Coming round the Mountain)

Oh, the ants are busy, busy as can be.
Oh, the ants are busy, busy as can be.
See them dig and dig and dig.
Lots of tunnels, oh, so big.
Oh, the ants are busy, busy as can be.

8 Ants
One ant two ants, three ants four.
Our picnic is their grocery store.
Five ants, six ants, seven ants, eight.
They are crawling on my plate!
Eight ants, seven ants,
Stomp around.
Six ants, five ants
On the ground.
Four ants, three ants,
On the run!
Two ants, one ant,
No more fun.

Ants go Marching
The ants go marching one by one
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The ants go marching one by one
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The ants go marching one by one
Watching Ants is lots of fun,
So let’s all go marching
One by one by one
Other verses:
The ants go marching two by two/ Worker ants have lots to do;
The ants go marching three by three/ The ants all live in a colony
The ants go marching four by four/ Now they’re marching through the door
The ants go marching five by five/ Hey, it’s time to say good by

Online Activities:

 Ant Craft
Egg Carton Ant

Materials Needed:

    1) cardboard egg carton - you need three cups attached
    2) scissors
    3) yellow, brown, red or black tempra paint (or another color if you want to make a creative ant)
    4) paint brush
    5) 4 pipe cleaners (chenille) -- three for legs and one for the antenna
    6) sharp pencil
    7) wiggly eyes, 2 cheerios or 2 fruit loops
    8) black marker
    9) glue

cut a strip of cups (3 cups) from the egg carton -- adults can do this before craft time. Paint the cups and let dry.
Using a sharp pencil, poke two holes in the top of the first cup -- adults can do this step before craft time.
Antenna:  from inside the cup, poke both ends of the pipe cleaner through the pencil holes (one end through each hole) to make antennae. You can twirl the ends around a pencil to make them curly. Using a sharp pencil, poke one hole on each side of each cup (6 holes in total) -- again, adults can do this step. Push a pipe cleaner through the holes in the first cup. Make the same amount of pipe cleaner stick out the sides -- these are two legs -- you can bend little feet into the ends of the pipe cleaner if you like.
Repeat with the second cup and third cup. You should end up with 6 legs when you're through. Glue the wiggly eyes onto the head (you could substitute 2 cheerios or 2 fruit loops) Draw on a mouth with black marker!

Beetles

Songs:

Never Hurt a Lady Bug
(Sung to: Yankee Doodle)

Ladybugs are in my yard.
Just look at them devour
Those pesky aphids on the leaves
Of Mother's pretty flowers.
Never hurt a ladybug.
We need them in the garden.
Ladybugs help flowers grow
So we must never hurt them.

Beetles
(Sung to: Frere Jacques)

Big beetles, small beetles, big beetles, small beetles,
See them crawl on the wall?
Creepy, creepy, crawling, never, never falling.
beetles, beetles, beetles,
beetles, beetles, beetles.

Beetle Fly
(Sung to: Three Blind Mice)

Fly, fly, fly
Beetles fly
Fly over here
Fly over there
They fly up high and they fly down low.
Around and around and around they go.
They fly fast, and they fly slow.
Oh, beetles fly

Ladybug Jigsaw Puzzle

Beetle Craft
Ladybug Hat

Materials Needed:

    1) Glue
    2) Wiggle Eyes
    3) Black or red pipe cleaners
    4) Yarn or string
    5) Hole punch
    6) Scissors
    7) 12”x18”Red craft foam sheets
    8) Black “sticky-backed” craft foam
    9) Small red craft foam hearts
    10) Black dot stickers
    11) Back Marker

Cut a strip of craft foam for each child. Make a hole on both ends of the strip. Trace a circle on the back of the black sticky foam. (A frosting container lid is the perfect size.) Cut the circle in half. Attach a half circle in the center of the headband at the bottom edge. Use glue to attach the wiggle eyes as well as some yarn for the mouth. Color the ladybug dots on the red part of the headband or use black dot stickers.
Make two holes right above the ladybug head and insert the chenille stem and twist to secure. Coil the pipe cleaner antennae around a pencil to curl. Attach heart stickers or pom-poms to the tips if you wish. The antennae will flop forward but when the ladybug headband is worn, they will stand straight. Loop the yarn through the hole to make ties.

Bees

Songs:

The Swarm of Bees
One little honeybee by my window flew;
Soon came another - then there were two.
Two happy honeybees in the apple tree;
One more bee came buzzing up - then there were three.
Three busy honeybees starting to explore
Another bee came to help - then there were four.
Four laden honeybees flying to the hive;
They were joined by one more bee - then there were five.
Five tired honeybees with the others mix;
Now there's a swarm of them - a hundred times six.

Bumble Bee
(Sung to: Jingle Bells)

Bumble Bee, bumble bee,
Landing on my nose,
Bumble bee, bumble bee,
Now he's on my toes.

On my arms, on my legs,
On my elbows.
Bumble bee, oh bumble bee
He lands, and then he goes.

Don’t Sting me
(Sung to: Are you Sleeping?)

Bumble bee, bumble bee
Don't sting me, don't sting me.
Just fly to your home,
And leave me alone.
Don't sting me, don't sting me.

Bee Craft
Bee Bouquet

Materials Needed:
1) Construction paper
2) Stapler
3) Pipe cleaner
4) Torn strips of yellow paper
5) Tape or glue
6) Pom-poms
7) Googly eyes

Hold a sheet of black construction paper with the shorter ends at the top and bottom. Starting at the lower right-hand corner, roll the sheet into a cone and tape or staple the overlap. Trim the top to create a rounded head on the front side. Form antennae by folding a pipe cleaner in half, stapling the bend to the backside of the head, then curl each tip around a small black pom-pom. Create stripes by wrapping torn strips of yellow paper around the cone and gluing them in place. Tape or glue on paper wings and a heart-shaped paper face complete with a drawn mouth and glued-on pom-pom eyeballs topped with googly-eye pupils.
For a hanger, make holes in opposite sides of the cone a half inch from the top. Thread a length of ribbon through the holes from inside the cone and tie each end into an overhand knot.

Spiders

Songs:

Spiders Invitation
(Sung to: Down by the Station)

Early in the morning
The spiders love to spin,
Then by and by
The flies drop in.
And when they come,
The spiders always say,
“We’re glad you came
For dinner today”!

Spider Dance
(Sung to: Farmer in the Dell)

Spiders crawl around, (children crawl around)
Spiders up and down, (stand up, bend down)
Spiders, spiders make a web, ( join right hands to form a spoke)
Spiders circle ‘round. (walk around in a circle together)
Spiders in and out, (crawl fingers on left hand, down and back on right arm)
Spiders all about, (repeat crawl action)
Spiders, spiders make a web,
Spiders now sit down. (children sit down)
Jean Warren

Busy Spider
(Sung to: This Old Man)

Busy Spider, he made one
Great big web on a drum,
With a spin, spin, spin
'Round and 'round he goes.
He puts on, quite a show.

Busy Spider, he made two
Great big webs on some shoes.
With a spin, spin, spin
'Round and 'round he goes.
He puts on, quite a show.

Busy Spider, he made three
Great big webs on a tree.
With a spin, spin, spin,
'Round and 'round he goes.
He puts on quite a show.
Busy Spider, he made four

Brilliant Bundles Early Learning Kits

Dear friends,
I write to you with some very exciting news! As many of you know, I have been searching for grants for my company for about 2 years now. The grant application process is usually intimidating, lengthy, complicated, and about 100 other things that just make you wanna go "hmmmm." They want to make sure they are giving those big bucks to someone who is going to use it EXACTLY how they say they will. Most have a requirement that you check in periodically with proof of where this money has gone. I am no expert on the process itself nor of how to write a really great proposal, but I am feeling extra super lucky about a 20th try this week where I happened to stumble upon a small business grant. I not only wanted to share my own info for the grant, but to provide this to anyone who's small business could also use a little help!

As you may know, Brilliant Bundles has been very very busy making kits for NB - 3+ yrs. They are scheduled to go on pre sale mid june so keep a look out!

To support Brilliant Bundles,  go to THIS LINK hit "log in and support" (no signing up, its through Facebook) and put Brilliant Bundles , Ohio, Powell into the search below, and hit vote! its that easy!!! I need at least 250 votes to be considered, and I would be soo very grateful!
Wanna know what youre voting for exactly? I would too! Unfortunately they do not provide my application publicly for you to see, so I felt it only fair that I share it with you :) Copy and Pasted, this is what I am all about.

Tell us about your business; how successful is it and why is it unique?
Brilliant Bundles is a company I started after my daughter
started having a thirst for knowledge at a very young age. I aim to
provide parents and caregivers with a platform to spend this quality
time with their children, teaching them, but above all, loving them.
For this reason, Brilliant Bundles was already successful before any
product prototype was even made. I provide pre made kits for ages newborn
to three plus years that teach important skills in brain exercising, math,
reading, art, imaginative play, healthy eating, and so much more. We are our
children's first teachers! Spending this kind of time with them every day
will not only create that special bond between parent and child, but it will
create a life long love of learning and success. Interactive Education Made
with Love to Inspire Love is what myself and Brilliant Bundles is all about.
To be able to share the wonderful experiences I have had with my own daughter
is the most success I could ever ask for! Brilliant Bundles also offers unique
preschool level kits that are themed, and like nothing else on the market today.
They are so engaging, interactive and fun that children will not even know they
are learning, they will just have a blast!
How is your business involved with the community you serve? Brilliant Bundles aims to provide early learning kits to
under privileged families in my community. This not only provides a
platform for children to learn, but for the parents as well, to learn
about spending this time with them, providing the child with confidence,
motivation, self worth, and most of all, love! When we take the time to
teach our children in loving and positive environments, we are actually
saying to them "You are important to me, I love you, and you are worth my
time." It is my belief that families who practice positive reinforcement,
early education, and play, result in children who will one day be apart of
their communities in the same positive ways! Brilliant Bundles up and coming
Healthy Eating Kit will provide an interactive way for children and their
parents to learn (and have fun!) about healthy foods, diet and exercise in
the market as well as in my community to families that may not have access
to this important information.
What would a $250k grant mean to your business plan and how will you utilize the funds to ensure long-term growth and stability? $250k would mean the world to my business, my family, and myself.
As of right now, Brilliant Bundles is in prototype design phase where
everything is designed by me, and hand made by me, usually in the wee hours
of the morning while my daughter is sleeping. A grant such as this will take
Brilliant Bundles to the level that it deserves to be. I would use the funding
to have Brilliant Bundles kits manufactured so that I can provide them at a
faster rate instead of taking a week or so just to hand make one kit at a time.
I plan to make sure that the manufacturing takes place in the United States as
that is important to me, and important to our country during these tough times.
Further funding will be used to hire experts who can market these products in
a way that will create greater business through advertizing and social media.
Brilliant Bundles is not a one hit wonder. I have new and exciting ideas that
are worked on constantly to make sure the business stays fresh, engaging, and
current.

What types of challenges can you identify with your plan and how will you overcome them? One of my businesses biggest challenges is balancing my work
hours as a single stay at home mom with the hours that I spend with my
daughter. This difficulty will be greatly reduced once the products can be
manufactured.

Describe the talent on your team and how they make your business successful. My daughter and I are the talent of Brilliant Bundles. I have
a BFA in time based media studies and graphic design and over 12 years
experience as a childcare provider and teacher. I am also a mom. Above all
my formal education and experience, it is the mom in me that makes
Brilliant Bundles successful, and my daughter, Lucy, who provides all
the inspiration, ideas, and motivation to do it every single day without
fail. I bring powerful, colorful, and engaging imagery to the brand as well
as all educational ideas and tools and my daughter brings the energy needed
for me to carry everything out.
Additional relevant information you would like to share

Since starting Brilliant Bundles two and a half years ago I have
been looking for funding. As of right now, I am working within a half office,
half playroom, a lot of times setting projects up on top of my daughters
Fisher Price toddler table. I give my time away for free as well as a lot of
DIY information. I listen on her monitor as I work and can hear her Rockabye
Baby Beatles CD playing, and I am in love. It may not seem like
much...to try to start a business with nothing but then I am constantly
reminded that I have everything. It would mean the world to be able to share
this. Thank you for the opportunity.

Preschool Starfish Activities for an Ocean Theme

For DIY flash cards, sight words, and getting started with a preschool ocean theme lesson plan, please visit Ocean Theme

After exploring crabsdolphinsfish, and sharks at the start of our ocean month, we moved onto starfish!

I always like to start with an info sheet. Print out your own by clicking on the picture below. I usually print on card stock and then laminate it with contact paper so that it can be kept around all month without getting damaged.
Recommended library books:
Starfish / Hurd, Edith Thacher
Starfish / Trueit, Trudi Strain
Wow! Ocean! / Neubecker, Robert

Starfish Songs

Sticky, Sticky Starfish
(sung to Twinkle Twinkle)
Sticky, sticky little starfish,
How I wonder what you are,
Beneath the sea so cool and blue
Can you see me as I see you?
Sticky, sticky little starfish
Beneath the sea so cool and blue

My Starfish Song
(sung to Mary had a Little Lamb)

I'm a little brown starfish,
Brown starfish, brown starfish
I'm a little brown starfish
Who lives under the sea

Sandpaper Starfish

What you will need:
1-2 sheets of sandpaper
crayons
glue
black paper
glitter glue

First, cut out some star shapes from your sandpaper sheet(s). Next, have you or your child  glue them on to a black piece of construction (or any other black paper). Set aside to dry. Let your child color the stars with crayons and ask them how the texture of the sandpaper feels. Finish off with some glitter glue! (I like to put the glue in a pallet and let Lucy paint it on with a paintbrush.)

Starfish Necklace

What you will need:
Assorted color star pony beads
String (I like to use old shoelaces so it's a little easier for her to thread)
Glue
coloring materials (crayons, paint, whatever you feel like!)

Print and cut out the starfish template and let your child color it. Tie a knot at one end of the string so the beads dont fall off of course. Leave a good 2 inches so you have something to tie the necklace together with at the end. Have your child work at stringing the beads, talking about colors and the shape while they do it. When they have strung about half way, fold the colored paper starfish over the string and glue the front to the back, also making sure to glue the string in with it so it cant move around. Have the finish beading on the other side, tie it off, leaving room once again and they'll have their very own starfish necklace! Awesome craft for fine motor skills!
