Brilliant Bundles Early Learning Kits

Dear friends,
I write to you with some very exciting news! As many of you know, I have been searching for grants for my company for about 2 years now. The grant application process is usually intimidating, lengthy, complicated, and about 100 other things that just make you wanna go "hmmmm." They want to make sure they are giving those big bucks to someone who is going to use it EXACTLY how they say they will. Most have a requirement that you check in periodically with proof of where this money has gone. I am no expert on the process itself nor of how to write a really great proposal, but I am feeling extra super lucky about a 20th try this week where I happened to stumble upon a small business grant. I not only wanted to share my own info for the grant, but to provide this to anyone who's small business could also use a little help!

As you may know, Brilliant Bundles has been very very busy making kits for NB - 3+ yrs. They are scheduled to go on pre sale mid june so keep a look out!

To support Brilliant Bundles,  go to THIS LINK hit "log in and support" (no signing up, its through Facebook) and put Brilliant Bundles , Ohio, Powell into the search below, and hit vote! its that easy!!! I need at least 250 votes to be considered, and I would be soo very grateful!
Wanna know what youre voting for exactly? I would too! Unfortunately they do not provide my application publicly for you to see, so I felt it only fair that I share it with you :) Copy and Pasted, this is what I am all about.

Tell us about your business; how successful is it and why is it unique?
Brilliant Bundles is a company I started after my daughter
started having a thirst for knowledge at a very young age. I aim to
provide parents and caregivers with a platform to spend this quality
time with their children, teaching them, but above all, loving them.
For this reason, Brilliant Bundles was already successful before any
product prototype was even made. I provide pre made kits for ages newborn
to three plus years that teach important skills in brain exercising, math,
reading, art, imaginative play, healthy eating, and so much more. We are our
children's first teachers! Spending this kind of time with them every day
will not only create that special bond between parent and child, but it will
create a life long love of learning and success. Interactive Education Made
with Love to Inspire Love is what myself and Brilliant Bundles is all about.
To be able to share the wonderful experiences I have had with my own daughter
is the most success I could ever ask for! Brilliant Bundles also offers unique
preschool level kits that are themed, and like nothing else on the market today.
They are so engaging, interactive and fun that children will not even know they
are learning, they will just have a blast!

How is your business involved with the community you serve? Brilliant Bundles aims to provide early learning kits to
under privileged families in my community. This not only provides a
platform for children to learn, but for the parents as well, to learn
about spending this time with them, providing the child with confidence,
motivation, self worth, and most of all, love! When we take the time to
teach our children in loving and positive environments, we are actually
saying to them "You are important to me, I love you, and you are worth my
time." It is my belief that families who practice positive reinforcement,
early education, and play, result in children who will one day be apart of
their communities in the same positive ways! Brilliant Bundles up and coming
Healthy Eating Kit will provide an interactive way for children and their
parents to learn (and have fun!) about healthy foods, diet and exercise in
the market as well as in my community to families that may not have access
to this important information.

What would a $250k grant mean to your business plan and how will you utilize the funds to ensure long-term growth and stability? $250k would mean the world to my business, my family, and myself.
As of right now, Brilliant Bundles is in prototype design phase where
everything is designed by me, and hand made by me, usually in the wee hours
of the morning while my daughter is sleeping. A grant such as this will take
Brilliant Bundles to the level that it deserves to be. I would use the funding
to have Brilliant Bundles kits manufactured so that I can provide them at a
faster rate instead of taking a week or so just to hand make one kit at a time.
I plan to make sure that the manufacturing takes place in the United States as
that is important to me, and important to our country during these tough times.
Further funding will be used to hire experts who can market these products in
a way that will create greater business through advertizing and social media.
Brilliant Bundles is not a one hit wonder. I have new and exciting ideas that
are worked on constantly to make sure the business stays fresh, engaging, and
current.

What types of challenges can you identify with your plan and how will you overcome them? One of my businesses biggest challenges is balancing my work
hours as a single stay at home mom with the hours that I spend with my
daughter. This difficulty will be greatly reduced once the products can be
manufactured.

Describe the talent on your team and how they make your business successful. My daughter and I are the talent of Brilliant Bundles. I have
a BFA in time based media studies and graphic design and over 12 years
experience as a childcare provider and teacher. I am also a mom. Above all
my formal education and experience, it is the mom in me that makes
Brilliant Bundles successful, and my daughter, Lucy, who provides all
the inspiration, ideas, and motivation to do it every single day without
fail. I bring powerful, colorful, and engaging imagery to the brand as well
as all educational ideas and tools and my daughter brings the energy needed
for me to carry everything out.

Additional relevant information you would like to share

Since starting Brilliant Bundles two and a half years ago I have
been looking for funding. As of right now, I am working within a half office,
half playroom, a lot of times setting projects up on top of my daughters
Fisher Price toddler table. I give my time away for free as well as a lot of
DIY information. I listen on her monitor as I work and can hear her Rockabye
Baby Beatles CD playing, and I am in love. It may not seem like
much...to try to start a business with nothing but then I am constantly
reminded that I have everything. It would mean the world to be able to share
this. Thank you for the opportunity.

Preschool Starfish Activities for an Ocean Theme

For DIY flash cards, sight words, and getting started with a preschool ocean theme lesson plan, please visit Ocean Theme

After exploring crabs, dolphins, fish, and sharks at the start of our ocean month, we moved onto starfish!

I always like to start with an info sheet. Print out your own by clicking on the picture below. I usually print on card stock and then laminate it with contact paper so that it can be kept around all month without getting damaged.
Recommended library books:
Starfish / Hurd, Edith Thacher
Starfish / Trueit, Trudi Strain
Wow! Ocean! / Neubecker, Robert

Starfish Songs

Sticky, Sticky Starfish
(sung to Twinkle Twinkle)
Sticky, sticky little starfish,
How I wonder what you are,
Beneath the sea so cool and blue
Can you see me as I see you?
Sticky, sticky little starfish
Beneath the sea so cool and blue

My Starfish Song
(sung to Mary had a Little Lamb)

I'm a little brown starfish,
Brown starfish, brown starfish
I'm a little brown starfish
Who lives under the sea

Sandpaper Starfish

What you will need:
1-2 sheets of sandpaper
crayons
glue
black paper
glitter glue

First, cut out some star shapes from your sandpaper sheet(s). Next, have you or your child  glue them on to a black piece of construction (or any other black paper). Set aside to dry. Let your child color the stars with crayons and ask them how the texture of the sandpaper feels. Finish off with some glitter glue! (I like to put the glue in a pallet and let Lucy paint it on with a paintbrush.)

Starfish Necklace

What you will need:
Assorted color star pony beads
String (I like to use old shoelaces so it's a little easier for her to thread)
Glue
coloring materials (crayons, paint, whatever you feel like!)

Print and cut out the starfish template and let your child color it. Tie a knot at one end of the string so the beads dont fall off of course. Leave a good 2 inches so you have something to tie the necklace together with at the end. Have your child work at stringing the beads, talking about colors and the shape while they do it. When they have strung about half way, fold the colored paper starfish over the string and glue the front to the back, also making sure to glue the string in with it so it cant move around. Have the finish beading on the other side, tie it off, leaving room once again and they'll have their very own starfish necklace! Awesome craft for fine motor skills!

Teasing Mr. Shark

Five little fishes (hold up five fingers) swimming in the sea (one hand to be fish swimming side to side) teasing Mr. shark (hands by head, thumbs in ears, wiggle back and forth) "can't catch me" (shake index finger) along came Mr. shark (two hands together prayer style swimming back and forth) quiet as can be, (hold index finger to lips) snap, snap, snap (clap hands together like a shark's mouth) now there's four little fishes swimming in the sea (hold up four fingers)

count down one fish at a time and then at the end of one little fishie swimming in the sea, instead of no more fishes you sing... "now Mr. shark said I'm full" (rubbing tummy)

Shark Sounds Song

Sing to the tune of "Wheels on the Bus", a song about shark sounds. Make up lines such as:The mouth on the shark goes snap, snap, snap, (kids snap fingers). The teeth on the shark go clap, clap, clap, (hold palms together and clap hands sharply). The tail on the shark goes whoosh, whoosh, whoosh (press hands together and wiggle hands to move forward). The people in the water shout, shark, shark, shark (form hands around mouth to shout).

Paper Plate Shark Mask

What you will need:

Paper plate
Yarn/string
Hole puncher
Scissors
Paint (we used water colors)

To start, DL and print the shark mask template from the link. Use this to trace and cut out the shape from a paper plate. Let your child paint their mask, and after its dry you can use your hole punch and string to them tie it onto them! Lots of pretend play fun :)

After exploring crabs and dolphins at the start of our ocean month, we moved onto fish!

Click to download and print this fish info sheet as an introduction to your child. for best results,
print on card stock and then laminate with contact paper so you can keep it around all month without too much wear and tear. Show the info sheet to your child and then ask them questions about what you've just read. ex- "Where do fish swim?"
You can also have your child pretend to be a fish by making fishy faces :)

Recommended books:
Puffer fish / Rake, Jody Sullivan

Clown fish / Lindeen, Carol
Fish is Fish / Lionni, Leo
The Fish Book / Angelfish, Christopher
In the Swim / Florian, Douglas

Fish Count and Sort/Match

What you will need:
Contact paper
scrap booking paper
scissors
glue stick
Numbers

First, fold your first piece of scrap booking paper in half so that the white of the paper is showing and the pattern/color is on the inside. Take a pencil and draw a simple fish shape. Fold your other colored papers the same way and put two or three more under the first and cut out the fish. This will limit the amount of cutting by giving you more fish with one cut. Repeat until you used all your paper and have 10 pairs of fish. Cut out all the numbers from the printout above and tack one to each fish using your glue stick. I also took a marker and drew a little eye on each fish. For lasting use, laminate them with contact paper. You can make so many games out of these!

Fish Songs

I'm a Fish

Sung to: "Little Teapot"

I'm a little fishy, I can swim
Here is my tail, here is my fin.
When I want to have fun with my friends,
I wiggle my tail and dive right in!

Fish Are Swimming
Sung to: "Frere Jacques"

Fish are swimming, fish are swimming,
In the sea, in the sea,
A-splishing and a-splashing,
A-splishing and a-splashing,
Look and see, look and see.

CD Fish

What you will need:

CD

white glue
foam craft sheet
multi colored sequins
googly eye
hot glue

I fist cut some foam shapes out of the foam and hot glued them to the underneath of the disc. You can use construction paper if you dont want to use the foam, I just had scraps around and thought it would be great for this. After that was set, I handed it over to Lucy and gave her a paint brush to paint on a layer of white glue. She then got to sprinkle all the sequins (scales) on as well as the googly eye!

Perler Bead Fish

What you will need:
Perler bead kit with fish template
Iron
Parchment paper

I can remember doing these when I was in school and loved them so much! So, when I saw the kits at  the craft store I decided it was going o be one of Lucy's birthday presents regardless of what the age said on the box lol. This activity is not for small children as there are very small parts that are a choking hazard. Unless you are confident in your child's understanding of not putting non food items in their mouths, do not attempt this activity. Even if you are confident, this requires your full supervision. I would most recommend this to a parent or caregiver who wants to try something new with their children and who wont mind dong a lot of the work with them :)

Lucy did pretty well at this! She was able to handle the little perler beads very well and place them on the template until she started to fill it up more and it got harder to put them into the very small spaces which is where I came in to help her finish it. Piece of parchment over the top, iron gently until the beads have melted together, without burning the paper and voila! Our kit also came with a dolphin and an octopus template. Perfect for our ocean theme!

Ocean Bottle

What you will need:
Water bottle
Hot glue
small fish toys
blue food coloring
cooking oil
water

Fill an empty bottle about 1/2 way with water and add a couple drops of blue food coloring. Next you can add glitter, sequins, small shells or small fish toys. Fill the remainder of the bottle with cooking oil and hot glue the cap on nice and tight! I also like to use duct tape around the base of the cap, just to make sure :)

Stained Glass Dolphin

What you will need:

Dolphin template
Contact paper
Tissue paper
Scissors
Permanent marker

Draw a simple shaped dolphin on a piece of white paper and cut it out to use as a template. Place your template on your child's table and lay out a nice sized sheet of contact paper over the top of your template (sticky side facing up) and tape the corners down. Set out a bowl with cut up tissue paper in your choice of colors. (We used light blue and purple.) Have your child stick on all their "glass" and try to get them to stick it over top of the dolphin template they can use as a guide. Next, seal the tissue paper in with another piece of contact paper and use the dolphin template over top to cut it into the dolphin shape! You can use a permanent marker over top to put in details like an eye and mouth :) I used a hole punch at the top to slip a suction cup hook through so we could hand it where the light was showing through.

Online Dolphin Activities

Create a dolphin picture. I loved this because it ended up being a really great activity for working on computer skills with having to click and hold the mouse to drag the creatures into the ocean. (Click on photo to try it out!)

Color the dolphins! Nice and simple, click a color with the paintbrush curser and click on various parts of the picture to color it. Awesome for color recognition and computer/mouse coordination. (Click photo to try it out)

Crab Crafts and Activities for an Ocean Theme - Preschool

The first ocean creature I brought out for or ocean theme month was the crab. For the month we have learned about the fiddler crab, king crab, ghost crab and spider crab and we have done so many fun activities and crafts, I thought id share! (For getting started on an ocean theme lesson visit Getting Started)

Toilet Paper Roll Crab

What's better than to use something you always have around the house? Don't throw away those empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls! They can be turned into anything... like this cute crab!

What you will need:

TP roll
Pipe cleaners
Paint (we used watercolors)
White glue
Googly eyes

Let your child paint the TP roll and then set aside to dry. When dry, use a hole punch on the ends of the roll so you can thread the pipe cleaners through to make his legs. Make 2 holes in the front for the claws and form some pipe cleaners into little loops and thread them through. Last, glue on some googly eyes! Very simple and your child will love it!

Sandpaper Crabs

What you will need:

Sandpaper
Crayons
Sheet of white paper
Iron
Glue
Googly eyes

Make a few crab shaped cutouts from the sandpaper to give to your child to color. Encourage them to press hard with the crayons and cover as much of the sandpaper as possible. When they are finished coloring, lay the sandpaper crabs crayon side down on a piece of white paper and iron (without steam) for a couple minutes making sure not to burn the paper. Lift the cutouts and voila! It will look like you've used stamps on the paper. Your child can then glue on some eyes for decoration if they like :)

Handprint Crab

What you will need:

Blue and white construction paper
White glue
Googly eyes
Red paint (we used tempra)
Tissue paper
Scissors

Cut up your desired colors of tissue paper into small chunks. (We used light blue and purple)
Next, lay out a sheet of blue construction paper and cover the surface (or let your kids) with a glue stick and let them stick the pieces of tissue paper on. Set aside to dry. Lay out a piece of white construction paper, and paint your child's hand with the paint and let them stamp it. Do the same with the other hand and have them stamp it again on the opposite side so it looks like the crab. You can then glue on some googly eyes on the thumbs. After the crab is dry, cut around it and paste it on to the ocean collage they made! So cute and "hands on" :P

Crab Counting and Matching

What you will need: (makes 20 crabs)
10 different colored and or patterned scrap booking papers
scissors
contact paper
Hot glue
googly eyes (if you haven't noticed, we really love using googly eyes!)

First, cut out the crab from the free printout. Next, fold your first piece of scrap booking paper in half so that the white of the paper is showing and the pattern/color is on the inside. Take a pencil and trace a crab on the paper using the template. Fold your other colored papers the same way and put two more under the first and cut out the crab. This will limit the amount of cutting by giving you 6 crabs with one cut. Repeat until you used all your paper and have 10 pairs of crabs. Cut out all the numbers from the printout above and tack one to each crab. For lasting use, laminate them with contact paper and use a hot glue gun to glue on the eyes! You can make so many games out of these!

Educational Crab Activities

I made this crab info sheet using red construction paper and then laminated it with contact paper so we could keep it around for learning purposes and word recognition. I've made a much cuter one that you can print by visiting Crab Info Sheet.  I would suggest printing it on card stock and then laminating it.
Show the info sheet to your child and then ask them questions about what you've just read. ex- "How many claws does a crab have?"

Another activity I like to do with Lucy is to have her pretend to be a crab. I ask her to show me how a crab walks, and how a crab eats. I lay out her morning snack and ask her to eat her snack like a crab and she pretends she has pinchers to eat it with :)

Recommended books:

Crab Songs

We're Little Orange Crabs

Sung to:
"The Farmer in the Dell"

 We're little orange crabs
Who live down by the sea,
 And where we do go
We're quick as quick can be.

 We're little orange crabs
Who like to run and hide,
And when you see us walking by
 It's always side to side.

Five Cranky Crabs

Five cranky crabs were digging on the shore.

One swam into a net and then there were four.

Four cranky crabs were floating in the sea.
One got tangled up in seaweed then there were three.
Three Cranky crabs were wondering what to do.
One dug a deep, deep hole. Then there were two.
Two cranky crabs were warming in the sun.
One got scooped up in a cup. Then there was one.
One cranky crab was smarter than his friends.
He hid between the jagged rocks.
That's how the story ends.

Mr. Lobster and Mrs. Crab

Mr. lobster and Mrs. crab
